Get the Preview of Visual Studio 2019 for Mac by updating to the Preview channel.

This release is not 'go-live' and not intended for use on production computers or for creating production code.

Many Project Managers that switch to Mac get a nasty surprise when they realize that Microsoft has never released MS Project for Mac. There are already some very good alternatives to Microsoft Project on Mac that can open, edit and even sync with MS Project such as the excellent Teamwork Projects. When we asked Microsoft: Can you use Project Online/Project Server and Project Pro with a Mac? The short answer was Macs can use the complete web functionality of Project Online. Detailed Project Schedulers/Project Managers will need to access to Project Professional in parallels or another vm emulator.

Terminal

Visual Studio for Mac now includes an integrated terminal. This feature has been a popular request and simplifies many common developer scenarios by allowing you to remain in Visual Studio for Mac. The integrated terminal uses the default system shell and integrates with the system shell's command history.

There are a few ways to open the Terminal:

• View > Pads > Terminal menu
• Ctrl + ~ keyboard shortcut (and Ctrl + ‘, to match Windows).
• Ctrl + ` will toggle the Terminal pad to be shown or hidden.
• Search in search bar: terminal (handled by menu name)
• Using a “New Terminal” button in the Terminal pad.

The terminal includes the following features:

• Integrated search, including case sensitivity, regex, and whole word searching
• Cycle through command history by pressing the up arrow key
• Multiple instances
• Localization support
• Light and dark theme support

Shell

• Visual Studio for Mac now has new identity libraries that should ease many of the issues that users have faced signing in. In addition, Visual Studio for Mac now supports device code authentication and system browser. You can enable these two options in Preferences should you need them. As a result of the new authentication flow, users who have been signed in previously will need to re-authenticate.

Debugger

• We ported the Breakpoints, Threads, and Call Stack pads to native Cocoa controls.
• We added the ability to add a watch from the editor using the context menu.
• We fixed an issue where char[], byte[], and sbyte[] types would not be shown in the value visualize for .NET Core projects.
• We fixed an issue where iOS 'Debugger Operation Failed'.

Project System

• We fixed an issue where the build output would not be cleared when loading or creating a new solution.
• It is now possible to use ~ as the start of the path when creating new projects.
• We changed the default build option to never jump to the first build error.
• We fixed an issue where deleting multiple files would not delete all the files, only the first file.

Editor

• We fixed an issue where editor scroll and caret position could change inadvertently.
• QuickInfo toolltips now show <returns> and <value> documentation.
• There is now a quick fix to switch between verbatim and regular string forms.
• Initial support for file_header_template in .editorconfig.

Test Tools

• We fixed an issue that would prevent some tests from showing in the Tests pad under some conditions.

Web and Azure

• We fixed an issue with how Empty ASP.NET Core projects show in recently used projects list.
• We fixed an issue where creating a new key vault in Connected Services failed with error: An invalid value was provided for 'acessPolicies'.
• We fixed an issue where moving folder with nested files did not work.
• We fixed an issue with DotNetCore console app adding empty ASPNETCORE_URLS environment variable.
• We fixed an issue where 'New' button didn't work on the 'Publish to Azure App Service' dialog.
• We fixed an issue in the Publish to Azure dialog when loading subscriptions failed.
• We fixed several issues in the Scaffolding dialog that was leading it to a noop UI state.
• We fixed an issue where the Scaffolding dialog allowed the user to enter invalid data.
• We added support for upcoming .NET Core 5.0 Preview 1 release.

Xamarin

• We re-implemented the plist source editor using native cocoa controls.
• We fixed an issue where the application name field in info.plist doesn't change display name of the app.

Microsoft Project Online For Mac

As a self-employed program manager, Tim specializes in large-scale data migrations and the development of sustainable business intelligence (BI) and analytic solutions. He has a wealth of experience in both IT and capital asset delivery, as well as general management, operational, and strategic roles in asset-intensive industries and regulation.

Like most consultants, Tim needs slick and stable IT to allow him to focus on the real issues. He doesn’t want IT issues to constantly be distracting him. Parallels Desktop offers a reliable platform that allows him to deliver.

As an avid personal user of Apple products, Tim also wished to migrate his work life to Mac. However, for most clients he needed to use Microsoft Project as a Gantt chart management tool. Being able to manage multi-project plans is an essential element for any program manager. Unfortunately, Microsoft Project is one of the few pieces of Microsoft software that has not been developed to run on macOS.

After online research, Tim concluded that the only successful way to use Microsoft Project on a Mac was through a Windows virtual machine. He discussed the issue directly with Apple, and they recommended Parallels Desktop as a solution.

Following a very simple installation of Parallels, Tim can now use Microsoft Project natively within a Windows environment on his MacBook Pro®. This means there’s no translation between products claiming to act as a Microsoft Project editor—quite simply, he’s running a Windows version of Microsoft Project on his Mac. Tim wholeheartedly recommends Parallels Desktop, which he has now been using successfully for several months. Installation was simple, and there are many configuration options that can be changed. (For example, the amount of memory dedicated to the Apple or Windows operating system.) This gives greater flexibility to the user. Tim hasn’t had any issues with Parallels Desktop at all, and the product is extremely stable in every way. Tim also added that Parallels® Toolbox (which comes included with Parallels Desktop) has been useful. He particularly likes the disk cleaning tool, which ensures his laptop is always operating efficiently.
